This time we definitely cross the border, by dedicating the Weekend Interview to our friend Stephane Gripari. Stephane is one of our most appreciated authors and we have the chance now to appreciate him as a genuine person and a true citizen of the world. The few words of this interview and some of his wonderful images tell a bit of his story.
D: La passione per la fotografia è per te un fatto ereditario? L’hai respirata nell’ambiente familiare ?
R: Una mia prozia era fotografa, scattava su lastre di vetro stereoscopiche, ma questo accadeva alla fine dell’800. E’ probabile che abbia ereditato quei geni, e la mia passione per la fotografia derivi da lì, fortunatamente oggi l’apparecchiatura è diventata più gestibile!!
Q: Where does the passion for photography come from? Is it something that comes from your family?
A: I did have a great aunt who was a photographer in the late 19th. early 20th. century. She shot on stereoscopic glass plates. I suppose I could have inherited those genes but fortunately the equipment has become more manageable!!
D: Quando e come ti sei quindi avvicinato alla fotografia?
R: I primi scatti li ho fatti all’età di 13 anni. Mi regalarono una Kodak Instamatic per il mio compleanno con 10 rullini. Allora vivevamo in Somalia e questo era il miglior regalo che potessi ricevere. Ricordo che dovetti aspettare un bel po’ per vedere il risultato, perhè i rullini dovevano essere inviati in Kenya per lo sviluppo.
Q: When did you approach photography and how did it happen?
A: I started taking photographs when I was 13 years old. I was given a Kodak Instamatic for my birthday with 10 rolls of film. We were living in Somalia at the time, and this was the best present I could receive. I had to wait for quite a while to see the results, as the films had to be sent to Kenya to be developed.
D: Di quale materiale tecnico ti avvali? Modello della macchina e obiettivi.
R: Dal 1975 uso esclusivamente fotocamere e lenti Nikon. La mia prima Nikon è stata una F2S che ho ancora. Ora uso Nikon D4 e D800. Ho anche una Hasselblad, che però uso raramente.
Q: What kind of camera, lenses do you use?
A: Since 1975 I have used exclusively Nikon cameras and lenses. My first Nikon was an F2s which I still have. I now use the Nikon D4 and D800. I also have
a Hasselblad and lenses but rarely use it these days.
