Our Interview is dedicated to our friend Set Po, one of our most appreciated Author. he lives in Ancona, where he worked as a doctor and finds his inspiration for his impressive photographic artwork. We just had a chat with him to try and understand how medicine can be combined with the minimalistic architecture photography. Here you can read a bit of his story that he is telling though the few, ironic words of this interview and some of his preferred images. Big thanks Ste and enjoy you all!
D: La passione per la fotografia è per te un fatto ereditario? L’hai respirata nell’ambiente familiare?
R: Sono un medico e come tale sono convinto che la genetica giochi un ruolo importante. Ho scoperto di avere un parente per linea paterna che aprì uno studio fotografico negli anni ’50 e ho un nipote che è fotografo professionista.
Mio padre non scattava, ma era un eccellente disegnatore tecnico navale, le forme, le linee e la precisione di esecuzione sono basilari per questa professione.
Insomma, l’interesse verso il genere fotografico “architettonico minimalista” non è casuale.
Q: Where does the passion for photography come? Is it something that comes from your family? R: I’m a doctor and I believe genetic plays a key role. In the 50s a distant relative had a photographic shop and a nephew of mine is currently a professional photographer. My father didn’t shot at all but he was an excellent naval designer and perfection with lines, shapes are key for this job.
D: Quando e come ti sei quindi avvicinato alla fotografia?
R: Nel passato remoto “analogico” ho avuto un paio di macchine fotografiche che usavo però solo nei viaggi a classico scopo documentativo.
Rivedendo ora le stampe e le diapositive di allora, un certo occhio compositivo a posteriori me lo riconosco ma niente di più.
La fotografia digitale e ancora di più l’avvento di Internet hanno acceso la mia passione.
Capivo che con estrema facilità e rapidità avrei potuto ottenere un buon prodotto e soprattutto condividerlo con altri, acquistai così la mia prima compatta digitale e mi iscrissi ad un sito fotografico. Questo accadeva nel 2008.
Vorrei spezzare una lancia a favore delle community e delle pagine social in generale. Spesso sottovalutate e criticate da una certa corrente di pensiero “tradizionalista”, sono state per me una continua fonte di apprendimento e condivisione. Ho forse imparato molto più da scambi telematici di opinioni e materiale che da corsi fotografici organizzati in loco, proiezioni e mostre. Serve tutto, ma la rete apre orizzonti molto più vasti, mette a contatto con correnti di pensiero ed espressione da tutto il mondo.
Q: When did you approach photography and how did it happen?
R: In the “analogic” past I had a couple of cameras which I used only to document my trips. As I review today those stamps and diapos I honestly have to say that I had some composition skills but nothing more. However, it is with the digital era and especially with Internet that my photography passion broke out. I was realizing that I could get a “good product”, easily and rapidly, and share it with other digital addicted! I bought then my first digital camera an made a subscription in a digital photography internet community. That happened in 2008.
I’d like to spend a few words on digital communities and social pages: they are often understimate and critizised mostly by the “traditional photography purists” but I have to say that in my case they have been a useful learning lab and a powerful mean of knowledge sharing. I’ve rather learned more with knowledge sharing in the web that with local traditional classes and workshops. Everything is worth of course, but the web can really widen one’s mindset and give the opportunity to share photography practicing with people from all over the world.
